Pledge Program Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of Alpha Zeta Theta's Pledge program is to: Allow Pledges to grow and learn within the designated Pledge period about the purpose and meaning of the chapter; to promote a higher standard of morals equal to and following that of the Scout Oath and Law; to establish Brotherhood through Leadership, Friendship, and Service; and to exemplify Leadership through Service and commitment to the Chapter, Friendship through Brotherhood and community, and pride for our organization through its rich history and foundations.

Alpha Zeta Theta Chapter conducts a Pledge Program for the mutual benefit of both the Pledge and the Chapter. The program's duration is approximately eight weeks and is described in the following pages. It serves to achieve the following objectives:

  • To Serve as an Introduction to Alpha Phi Omega
The structure of the program gives each Pledge adequate time to learn the purpose, meaning, traditions, and inter-workings of the Chapter. Pledges are given the opportunity to earn the trust and friendship of the Brothers through participation in the various programs the Chapter provides solely for the benefit and growth of its Pledges.

  • To Inform the Pledge about our Fraternity -- its History and its Purpose.
The Fraternity is rich in history, foundation, and tradition, and strives to teach the origins and purpose behind everything we proudly call Alpha Phi Omega. This is accomplished through the Pledge classes during the Pledge program, and through the Big Brother/Little Brother program, in which Brothers take on the responsibility of passing on our legacy to our Pledges.

  • To Unify the Pledges with Each Other and with the active Brothers through Group Participation in the Activities of the Chapter and of the Pledge Class.
Our Chapter is nothing without the Brotherhood each member shares with one another. Our Pledge program is strong and unified, and each Brother strives to complete our Brotherhood by forming lasting bonds and friendship with each and every Brother, and with the Pledges of each Pledge class.

  • To Permit Each Individual to Successfully Demonstrate Qualities and Principles of Leadership, Fellowship, and Service.
Through the program established for the Pledge class, each Pledge is afforded ample opportunity to develop these qualities. Many Pledges and Brothers alike have discovered the best in themselves while engaging in Service to others.

  • To Provide and Environment in which Pledges can Cultivate and Exhibit Characters Desirable to Alpha Phi Omega.
Membership in Alpha Phi Omega and the Alpha Zeta Theta Chapter is earned, not granted on any preconceived judgment.

  • To Give the Pledge a Provisional Period with the Chapter, and an Opportunity to Decide whether or not to Accept an Invitation to Become an Active Brother.
Each Pledge is a part of the Fraternity and of Alpha Zeta Theta Chapter from the moment he/she pledges. Each is witness to what Alpha Phi Omega is and does each day for others.

Pledges must be committed to satisfying all Pledge Requirements during the pledging period.
